Properties of EPDM sponge

The main difference between EPDM sponge and EPDM foam is that the sponge rubber has a skin around the open cells. This skin makes the material both water- and airtight and ensures that little to no moss formation occurs if the material is used outdoors where it comes into contact with water. The open cell structure makes it a soft, easily compressed foam material. Just like EPDM rubber, the material is resistant to ageing and suitable for exposure to weather influences such as UV radiation and ozone, as well as steam. This sponge rubber can also be used to exclude dust, gases and light acids and alkalis. It even retains its properties when subjected to large differences in temperature. The material is also resistant to chemicals, better so than the neoprene version. EKI can supply EPDM sponge in single- or double-sided self-adhesive versions, made to measure in numerous different shapes and sizes. It is available in white, black or grey.

EPDM sponge applications

The water- and airtight properties of EPDM sponge make it a good option for seals that come into contact with a lot of water or are subjected to high air pressure. When converted into a D profile or P profile, this material can be used as draught strip for frames and doors. Because it can be converted into all kinds of shapes, from round and semi-circular to square and rectangular, it can be used for a variety of seals for doors, shutters, slots or other recesses. If converted into rubber cord, it can also be used for seals or as finishing profiles. The sponge rubber can also be used to protect corners.
