Silicone Foam

Silicone foam is water-resistant and can be used at higher temperatures of at least 200°C. It is also highly resistant to external influences, including weather, and is extremely durable. It is widely used for some of the more demanding types of seal and as a bumper material.

    Properties of silicone foam

This type of sponge rubber consists of almost closed cells covered by a skin. The skin makes it watertight and resistant to dilute acids and alkalis. The material is soft, easy to compress and permanently flexible. Silicone foam can be used at higher temperatures of up to 200-230°C. It is very suitable for use in situations where it is subject to UV radiation, ozone and other weather influences, and because of this resistance to external influences, it is also resistant to ageing and generally has a long life span. However, this material is not so well suited to applications that involve contact with oil. It is lightweight and easy to cut into a variety of shapes. Interestingly, it is supplied as standard in ivory white, but can also be supplied in other colours such as red, black and blue. Some types of silicone foam are suitable for contact with food, and accordingly satisfy the FDA standard. Because few adhesives stick to it effectively, silicone sponge rubber is a difficult material to bond. We can supply the silicone foam rubber in a self-adhesive form, for example as an assembly aid, however the self-adhesive layer is not suitable as a permanent fixative. At EKI, we can convert silicone foam to various custom shapes, including round, semi-circular, square and rectangular.

    Silicone foam applications

The material’s durability in the face of external influences and its watertight properties mean that it is suitable for demanding applications such as seals for doors, shutters, ovens, lids, boilers and manholes. Silicone foam can also be used as a bumper material because it is very resilient. When used in seals for doors and shutters, the material’s resistance to external influences really comes to the fore. Similarly, its resistance to high temperatures stands out when it is used to make seals for ovens and boilers. And when used for sealing lids and manholes (on boats, for example), the watertight properties of silicone foam are important.
