    Properties of silicone rubber

This type of rubber is suitable for use at a variety of temperatures ranging from very cold to extremely hot. Its mechanical properties also remain intact at these temperatures, with the material staying very flexible even at extreme temperatures and returning to its original shape after compression. Silicone rubber is highly resistant to ageing under the influence of UV radiation and ozone, which means it is frequently chosen for applications in extreme conditions. Its low flammability is also beneficial, and even if it catches fire, it produces little in the way of toxic smoke. The material’s durability in the face of external influences means that it has a long life span. It is also easy to clean and sterilise, is resistant to bacteria and fungi, and is highly resistant to chemicals. Silicone rubber is less resistant to oils, strong acids and hydrocarbon products, and we recommend NBR rubber instead for applications involving contact with oils. Because few adhesives stick to it effectively, silicone rubber is a difficult material to bond. We can supply the rubber in a self-adhesive form, for example as an assembly aid, however the self-adhesive layer is not suitable as a permanent fixative. The relatively more costly silicone raw material can easily be processed into materials with a wide range of hardnesses. We can deliver silicone sheets in the colours white, black, red and transparent, and in various hardnesses.

    Silicone rubber applications

Silicone rubber is widely used in the medical and pharmaceutical sector and the food industry because it is hypoallergenic and does not react with other substances. Because it is hypoallergenic, it is also used in baby products. It can also be found in the automotive and chemical industries, DIY products, clothing and accessories. Because it retains its shape and is resistant to a wide range of temperatures, the material is frequently used for silicone seals, certain types of which are commonly used in applications involving contact with drinking water because the material does not affect the water quality. Other applications include seals for ovens, light covers and boilers, as well as in household appliances and lighting. Silicone rubber is clearly an incredibly versatile material!
