Butyl Tape

Butyl tape is a self-adhesive strip made from butyl rubber. This material has very strong adhesive properties and is used primarily in airtight construction. The butyl strips are highly versatile and can be used to create airtight, watertight and/or vapour barrier seals in various locations.

Properties of butyl tape

Butyl tape is a self-adhesive strip made from butyl rubber. These strips are mainly used in airtight construction. The self-adhesive membranes are suitable for this purpose because butyl is waterproof, airtight and acts as a vapour barrier, and has good resistance to UV and weather influences. On its own, the butyl strip has considerable adhesive power. Even at very high and low temperatures, the adhesive layer remains flexible and does not sag or dry out and become hard. It adheres permanently to virtually all common substrates, even to substrates with a small degree of unevenness. The material is very resistant to aging and has a long lifespan. In addition, butyl is very easy to process, does not require maintenance, is easy to apply and can be painted over.

Butyl tape applications

Butyl tape is often used for seals in airtight construction. When properly applied, it contributes to a building's energy savings, so it aligns effectively with concepts such as the passive house and energy neutral homes. The strips can be used to seal joints for which an airtight, watertight and/or vapour barrier seal is desired. These are mainly found in supporting structures and facade elements, for example between a window frame and a cavity sheet. Seams between concrete elements can also be sealed with butyl tape. It can also be used to equalise pressure in the facade structure. Other connections that can be made with the butyl strips include those between moisture barriers, membrane and profile connections to various materials such as metal, plastic, concrete, wood and stone. In addition, butyl tape is used to seal air ducts and to create waterproof seals in caravans, campers and the like. Self-adhesive butyl tape is widely used in container and silo construction, shipbuilding, equipment construction, roofing construction and in sanitary installations. In short, this material can be used for demanding seals.
