What is Basotect?
Basotect is a thermosetting material made from melamine resin, a specific type of plastic. It has an open-cell structure, meaning the foam cells are interconnected and air can circulate freely. This gives Basotect excellent acoustic and thermal properties. The melamine foam is also lightweight, making it easy to handle.
What properties does Basotect have?
Basotect foam is made from melamine foam. The material has excellent sound-absorbing properties, is flame-retardant, and provides good thermal insulation. It is a lightweight foam that is highly durable. Its flame-retardant properties comply with the DIN 4102 class B1 standard, meaning it remains stable up to 80°C and is heat-resistant up to 150°C. A disadvantage of Basotect melamine foam is that under certain weather conditions, such as high humidity, it may expand or shrink, which can lead to tearing.

How is it applied?
The most common application of Basotect foam is sound absorption. Its sound-absorbing properties significantly reduce reverberation time in a space, improving acoustics and speech intelligibility. For this reason, it is often referred to as acoustic foam. Absorption is most effective at frequencies between 50 and 1000 Hertz. For reference, human speech typically ranges between 100 and 300 Hertz, meaning speech sounds are effectively absorbed by Basotect foam. Because absorption remains consistent across nearly all frequency ranges, sound is not distorted. Common locations where the material is used include classrooms, office buildings, lecture halls, auditoriums, hospitality venues, gyms, and similar spaces. White Basotect melamine foam is most commonly used for these applications. It is also used in spaces with strict fire safety requirements, such as restaurants, concert halls, schools, and hospitals. In case of fire, this foam produces minimal smoke.
In which EKI products is Basotect used?
At EKI, we manufacture Basotect melamine foam from blocks with a thin outer skin. These are then processed into smaller blocks, sheets, strips, and custom shapes, which we supply in desired quantities. We also offer these forms with single- or double-sided adhesive layers. Our range includes white (EKI 115) and extra-white Basotect foam (EKI 114). It is suitable for both consumer and industrial applications.
