Synthetic foam has a closed cell structure and is widely used as an insulation material thanks to its reduced thermal expansion properties. The material is also flame retardant and is suitable for use as sound insulation. It is often used as pipe insulation and for other types of thermal insulation.
Synthetic foam is a composite made up of various hollow particles of polymer, metal or ceramic. It is a collective term for artificially manufactured foams. A polymer is generally used as a binding material, however metal and glass are sometimes used too. Due to the hollow parts, this foam has a lower density, is stronger, and has a lower thermal expansion. This makes it highly suitable for use as insulation against heat and cold. Because this material is synthetic, it can be made to almost any property specifications by using the right blending ratios. For example, Armaflex insulation foam is extremely flexible, enabling it to be installed simply and rapidly. It has a closed cell structure that prevents the formation of condensation, and its low thermal conductivity makes it an effective energy saving material. The surface temperature of the foam remains the same due to the increasing insulation thickness. Furthermore, it is highly resistant to water vapour, reducing the risk of corrosion under the insulation. The material’s flame-retardant properties and the fact that it neither drips nor conducts fire make it a safe option where fire is concerned. For this reason, it is widely used in public spaces and processing industries. Finally, it also has a long life span. EKI converts synthetic foam from rolls into strips, rings and other shapes, in various dimensions and thicknesses, and also in self-adhesive versions. EKI’s profiles can be used for applications such as pipe insulation.
Armaflex foam is used in sport and the aviation and aerospace industry. Ship hulls and skis are also made from this material. Due to its acoustic and flame-retardant properties, the most common application of synthetic foam is as pipe insulation. However, it also has many other uses as insulation, such as the cladding for cold stores and doors, the insulation and protection of pipelines, thermal insulation of reservoirs, tanks, vessels and air ducts, and in air conditioning. Thanks to its acoustic properties, it is also an effective option for sound insulation.
