PVC Foam

PVC foam has a semi-closed cell structure, which means that it becomes closed when compressed to a certain degree. For this reason, it is widely used as a sealing tape in joints with a large joint gradient. The material is supplied on flexible rolls.

Properties and use as weatherstrip

PVC foam is a semi-closed material, which means that it becomes completely closed on compression by a certain percentage. The percentage involved could be 15%, but also 30% or 90% depending on the type. When the material is compressed, the cells close, transforming it into a closed cell material. This makes it very useful as a weatherstrip for joints with an irregular surface and large joint gradient, both indoors and outdoors. Masonry is a well-known example, as masonry surfaces are never completely smooth and regular. Expansion or dilatation joints often have this type of surface. This weatherstrip material is particularly well suited to excluding dirt, dust and heat or cold. PVC foam is a durable material with a long life span thanks to its excellent weather resistant properties. This means it can be used at both low and high outdoor temperatures. It also has a high UV radiation and ozone resistance.

Types and shapes of PVC foam

EKI converts rolls of this material into strips and shapes. However, the most familiar form of PVC foam is the hard PVC foam sheet, which is a different type of product with other applications. A PVC roll from EKI is very flexible by contrast, and is easy to cut into various sizes and roll up. PVC rolls are supplied in white, light grey or dark grey.

PVC foam applications

Because PVC foam is so suitable as a sealing material, it’s often used between frames, on cavity wall skins and in rebates where frames are mounted cold against each other. It is also used in partition walls, and as a widely used insulation material. The self-adhesive variety is often used as a draught strip and as a seal that excludes liquids.
