Expanding Foam Tape

Expanding foam tape is a type of polyurethane foam that comes in the form of compressed foam tape that automatically expands after being unrolled. Due to this property, it is widely used in renovations as tape to seal an existing joint. The material is also flame retardant and self-adhesive.

    Properties of expanding foam tape

Expanding foam tape is actually precompressed, impregnated polyurethane foam. The special characteristic of this type of foam is that under normal circumstances, it will begin to expand about half an hour after being rolled out. It originally comes as a compressed foam tape. This open-celled material is used to fill joints, including those with a strong gradient. Expanding foam tape is used to seal joints in restoration and renovation work. After a maximum of one day, the joint or seam will be completely filled and sealed. The material retains its elasticity and offers protection against draughts, noise, dust and heat or cold. It is also flame retardant and will therefore not readily cause a fire. Thanks to its resistance to ageing, the material has a long life span, and is also easy to apply and resistant to UV radiation. EKI supplies different types of expanding foam tape from standard to Kelfort kokomo tape, which bears the KOMO quality mark, and extra heavily impregnated tape. These varieties are available as a roll in black or grey, with one self-adhesive side.

    Expanding foam tape applications

This foam tape is used as joint tape for wall panels, masonry with frames and rebates, roof and façade elements, expansion joints, glazing and metal profiles. It is ideal for creating airtight connections. If the expanding foam tape is applied to a connection (for example in a fan), it can be easily placed in a pipe or hole. Once the tape expands, there will be an airtight seal. Another application is as backing rod for use with sealants. This type of foam tape is resistant to ageing and the influence of weather, and can be used as a rain seal due to its downpour-proof qualities. An advantage of this material is that it is cleaner and provides a better seal than something like PUR foam.
